Hi, I see the ones you are adding. I think it would be a good idea if we created a template for you, so that we can then tweak up the presentation without having to re-edit all the entries. Then I or someone can do something like the greek letter box. (Look at Kappa). So if you used something like {{egy-hiero|G36:D21-V28-W23:D40}} then the template can do all the work. Put the template right after the ===Egyptian header=== and I can make a box that floats right just like the greek letter display box. (use the IS 639-3 code for Egyptian instead of "egy") Should have said or done something like this when I made the suggestion ... Robert Ullmann 17:01, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Tried creating a template. I'm up against what I think is a WikiMedia bug: it does something like expanding the hiero tag before doing template parameter substitution. But I'm not sure exactly what is going on. See Template:egy-hiero Robert Ullmann 19:58, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

It is a design problem in wiki, you can't substitute parameters in hiero tags, just like you can't in math tags. I edited pAt to what I think is a better format; there is no reason for the word in proper font not to appear on the line below the part of speech just like in any other language. It just can't be the page name. I put pronunciation first as is usual. Looks pretty good to me, tell me what you think? Template isn't going to help. Oh, note you can make a wikipedia link with w:, you don't need or want to use the whole URL. See pAt source. Robert Ullmann 20:41, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Okay. I'm pretty sure we want to use the Noun header twice in a case like pr-aA. There are, after all, two nouns. Is more consistant with the case of two different POS. See my edit to pr-aA. Thanks! (I will do away with the template so no one is confused.) Robert Ullmann 00:37, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

requests

It's great to see some decent Egyptian entries on here at last. There are a few English words which came from Egyptian, and it would be nice to get these etymologies linked to the relevant Egyptian words. The ones I'm currently looking at are pharaoh, pschent and ba; there are probably others. Any help with filling in the gaps is much appreciated. Widsith 17:39, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Vote for extinct languages

Hello, CAmbrose. I'd like to tell you about a proposal currently being voted on that changes the English Wiktionary rules for how extinct languages are handled.

Currently, words in extinct languages can be added to Wiktionary only if they are actually "used," such as in a sentence. The new proposal says that if someone "mentions" them (such as an ancient Greek writer talking about an Egyptian word), they can be added to Wiktionary as long as there is a tag that says something like, "This word is not fully attested in actual use."
