Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

• How to edit a page is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or make a hyperlink. The Wiktionary tutorial is a more wordy, multi-page document that helps you through those same formatting issues, and also touches on a couple of other issues relevant to editing.
• The document What Wiktionary is not may be of interest. In particular, if you've edited Wikipedia in the past, you should note that Wiktionary is not an encyclopedia and does not have Wikipedia-style page titles.
• How to start a new page is a technical guide to, well, how to start a new page. But you'll also want to look at our guidelines for how to format an entry (what goes where) and our criteria for inclusion (what can be included), which are our two main policy documents. (You can get a feel for how to format an entry by looking at existing entries.)
• The Sandbox is a safe place for testing markup.
• The FAQ has, of course, some frequently (and some infrequently) asked questions, and their answers.

Translations

Translations should only be added for English words. On the English Wiktionary, we restrict Translations to only English entries. EncycloPetey

Also, your Etymology 2 & 5 are the same. Is that correct or a mistake? --EncycloPetey 21:29, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

The word has the same spelling, but one of them is a verb and the other one is a noun (in Old Norse too).

Correction: Both are nouns (I first looked at Etymology 1 and 5). 9E2 22:07, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

My source (http://www.dokpro.uio.no/perl/ordboksoek/ordbok.cgi?OPP=v%E6r&bokmaal=S%F8k+i+Bokm%E5lsordboka&ordbok=begge&s=n&alle_former=on) only gives the Old Norse word. Shall I change the etymologies to "Etymology 2: Old Norse veðr (weather)" and "Etymology 5: Old Norse veðr (male sheep)"? 9E2 21:36, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

That would be a good thing, but we really should have the information at veðr as well, if it has two meanings. --EncycloPetey 21:45, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

I found the two different origins: Common Germanic *wedhram (weather) and Common Germanic *wither (male sheep, according to widar) 9E2 21:54, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Lovely. Could you add that information to the entry for veðr? I've formatted the etymologies for vær; you might want to examine the etymological templates, as they're very useful. The template {{etyl}} uses the ISO codes. --EncycloPetey 22:01, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
