Welcome!

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing page for a similar word, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary, though it may be a bit technical and longwinded. The most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
  • A glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.
  • If you have anything to ask about or suggest, we have several discussion rooms. Feel free to ask any other editors in person if you have any problems or question, by posting a message on their talk page.

You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage. This shows which languages you know, so other editors know which languages you'll be working on, and what they can ask you for help with.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Again, welcome! — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 23:41, 16 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Is hoạt used in isolation in Vietnamese (i.e. as a standalone word)? If not, it should not be included in the CJKV descendants box. RcAlex36 (talk) 03:51, 13 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Also pinging @PhanAnh123. RcAlex36 (talk) 04:05, 13 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
I would say it depends. Speakers would have no idea what you mean if you just talk about hoạt all the sudden, but it does occur alone in some specific contexts. Still, it occurs almost exclusively as a bound morpheme in compounds.PhanAnh123 (talk) 04:24, 13 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@PhanAnh123 I am going to remove it from the box then, since it is not used as a free morpheme. RcAlex36 (talk) 06:42, 14 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

@RcAlex36 I feel you are misinterpreting the "green Sino-Xenic box". The point is to just put the orthodox Sino-Xenic readings of that Character (or sometimes compound word/ phrase) in that box. If we would judge it by only allowing Sino-Xenic descendants that can be used as a free morpheme, then we must also remove Sino-Japanese descendants such as 活 (かつ), 割 (かつ), or 雨 (う) since they cannot be used as a standalone morpheme and can only be used in either written language or in very specific contexts.

The only time we shouldn't put the sino-xenic descendants is when the Chinese term didnt exist in Classical Chinese, is never used in the language (such as 驌), or the character does not possess an orthodox reading such as 熵 or 瓥.

Despite all that "hoạt" is still a descendant of 活, just like "anti-" is a descendant of ἀντί. 范俊華 (talk) 08:33, 14 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Justinrleung Any thoughts on this? RcAlex36 (talk) 09:25, 14 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
I disagree with you, 范俊華. The CJKV box, as with {{desc}}, is generally used for free morphemes or productive (currently or in the past) affixes, not just for any morpheme. It's kind of like we don't have nat- in English just because it appears in nation or native. Japanese 活 (かつ) is recorded in Japanese dictionaries such as 大辞林 as a free morpheme, and we do have an entry for it. Is hoạt listed in Vietnamese dictionaries as a free morpheme? — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 20:12, 14 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
