User:Darxus/IPA Substitution

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

If you have IPA pronunciation that contains symbols not in the English pronunciation appendix, these are some suggestions to try which are in that appendix.

If you're not familiar with the IPA, I strongly recommend watching a few videos on youtube. The IPA chart is largely composed of two tables, consonants and vowels. Each table is a two dimensional chart, where each dimension is which part of your mouth you use to make the sound. So it's pretty simple to figure out what sound / symbol is similar to another. Other parts of the chart are "diacritics" and "suprasegmentals" which are symbols that provide additional detail (that we don't use) which can just be removed.

This currently focuses on General American.
