This page is dedicated to collaboration between editors contributing Bulgarian entries to Wiktionary. "News" is used loosely here - announcements, discussions, calls to action and requests for comments are all welcome. There is no "owner" of this page - it's for all of us to keep each other up to speed. Feel free to add this page to your watchlist!
Note that it is not a goal to duplicate or supersede what the Beer Parlour, Etymology Scriptorium and Tea Room do - make sure you're familiar with them, and take advantage of what they provide when needed.

[edit]Are you tired of having to list all the perfective and imperfective derived verbs of a given main verb by hand? Try the new template {{bg-derived verbs}}. It reuses a module with similar templates for Russian and Polish.

New template: R:bg:Neolex
[edit]The Infolex online database by the Institute for Bulgarian language also contains neologisms - you can now take advantage of that using {{R:bg:Neolex}}.
For example: {{R:bg:Neolex|наркобарон}} produces:

Project announcement: Bulgarian Lemma Improvement Project (BLIP)
[edit]Hi folks! For a while, I've been tossing around some ideas in my head about how we could raise the quality of Bulgarian entries. To that end, I'm proposing the Bulgarian Lemma Improvement Project (BLIP). Take a look, and let me know what you think!
I'm still actively working on the document, so some sections are marked as Coming soon! However, there should hopefully be enough in there for you to understand the goals of the project, and the first of several envisioned increments.

Accelerated entry creation: improved support for Bulgarian participles
[edit]Bulgarian verb conjugation tables allow for the accelerated creation of entries for verb forms, via acceleration tags. Until today, accelerated entries for participles in particular were creating entries with the wrong POS section - "===Verb===" instead of "===Participle===", and they weren't using the headword templates {{bg-part}} and {{bg-part form}}. User:WingerBot even has a special task to fix that - see the history of искащ.
After recent changes to Module:accel/bg, accelerated entries for participles and participle forms are now using the correct POS section and headword templates. Example accelerated entries created after the change: пържен, пържил, пържел, пържейки, пържещ, пържещият and пържена.
Additions to the Bulgarian dialect module
[edit]Module:bg:Dialects has now gained several top-level dialects, as well the ability to replace {{bg-PRO}}. For example:

Dialect markers can be used in {{alt}}, {{desc}}, and the various "-nyms" like {{syn}} and {{ant}}. For a demonstration of the recently added dialect labels, take a look at User:Chernorizets/test-dialects.
The information is taken from the Wikipedia article on Bulgarian dialects, and the clickable links generated by the labels correspond to more specific WP articles about dialect areas or individual dialects. My intent is to add the remaining specific ones as well in the near future.
The usefulness of this is for those of you who would like to provide more context to dialectal alternative forms in Bulgarian entries. It's still perfectly OK to just say things like {{alt|bg|млеко||dialectal}}, but I want us to have the option of being more specific if we want to.

[edit]Changes to adjective declension tables
[edit]{{bg-adecl}} used to display vocative masculine forms of adjectives by default. This could be suppressed using the -voc option. On the corresponding module's talk page, I made the point that vocative adjective forms are, actually, rather rare in modern Bulgarian, and only habitually used with a handful of adjectives used to address people, like драг (drag) or уважаем (uvažaem).
The following changes have now been made:
- vocative forms are no longer shown by default in adjective declension tables.
The template optionThe template option-vocis kept in order not to break existing entries, but has no effect.-vocis therefore no longer needed, and has been removed. - a new option -
+voc- has been added to explicitly request the vocative masculine form using{{bg-adecl}}. As of this writing, the following adjectives make use of that option: мил (mil), драг (drag), скъп (skǎp), уважаем (uvažaem), любим (ljubim) and млад (mlad). - as an added bonus, vocative forms ending in -ий now have a footnote pointing out that they are archaic.
The documentation of {{bg-adecl}} has been updated to reflect the changes.
Update (Dec 10): User:Benwing2 ran a bot job to remove the now-obsolete -voc option from the 34 Bulgarian adjectives which were using it in their declension tables. With that, we were able to remove the option entirely from Module:bg-nominal.
Hello everyone, you may be aware that we've had {{bg-hyph}} around for some months now, which can display the hyphenation of a word (i.e. where it's able to be split onto a new line). We'd also been working on a syllabification function, which outputs the spoken syllables of a word, and it was finally ported to Module:bg-pronunciation just the other day.
The practical effect of this is that {{bg-hyph}} will now output two lines whenever the hyphenation and syllabification are different. For words where they're the same, it'll just output a single line reading "Hyphenation", given that this is the more widespread feature on Wiktionary.

You can see a summary of the distinction between hyphenation and syllabification at WT:ABG#hyphenation. It still remains to put a link to this in the hyphenation output itself for users to read, but that's the easy part.

Changes affecting Bulgarian verbal noun entries
[edit]In a recent discussion about Module:bg-verb, a few issues were pointed out with how Bulgarian verbal nouns were being handled:
- they were being classified as non-lemma verb forms, instead of as lemma nouns, which they actually are;
- verb conjugation tables were listing rare or non-existent plural forms in -та, in addition to the regular plural in -ния
- accelerated entry creation for verbal nouns resulted in entries that weren't using the right POS header, headword templates, etc.
This issues are now mostly addressed:
- Module:bg-headword has been updated to classify verbal nouns as lemma nouns
- Module:accel/bg has been updated to create well-formed entries for verbal nouns, with a standard etymology section, and a noun declension table. Recently created verb noun entries that illustrate both of these changes are: мирисане (mirisane), пържене (pǎržene) and повръщане (povrǎštane).
- Module:bg-verb has been updated to no longer provide accelerated creation for verb noun inflected forms. This job is now delegated to the declension table in verb noun entries (see above), and it gives editors the ability to specify correct pluralization (or no pluralization, as is sometimes the case) on a case-by-case basis. Only the base form of a verbal noun - e.g. мирисане (mirisane) - can still be created via acceleration from the conjugation table (in this case for мириша (miriša)).
Kiril kovachev is running a bot job to make sure that existing Bulgarian verbal noun entries follow the new pattern demonstrated by the three example entries mentioned above. There is also an open request for deletion for incorrect/non-existent verb noun plural forms that have been created in the past.
