Etymology

[edit]

thánh +‎ Dóng. Dóng is the modern form of a word attested written as 扶董 (MC bju tuwngX, “Phù Đổng”) in Chinese characters, with typical lenition of medial stop.

Dóng was probably the village name and not the personal name of the character in the legend. The tên Nôm of the village of Phù Đổng was Dóng.

The spelling ‹Gióng› is unetymological but more commonly used than ‹Dóng›. Compare also giềng (as in láng giềng), a word now commonly spelled with ‹gi› but attested as diềng in Middle Vietnamese.
