आनपानस्मृति

I think there are a whole host of Sanskrit entries that seem to exist only to anchor a Tocharian B term. Digital Corpus of Sanskrit. — This unsigned comment was added by Caoimhin ceallach (talk • contribs).

If it's not attested as Sanskrit but has been inferred from a Tocharian B borrowing by someone who knows what they're doing, it should be moved to the Reconstruction namespace as Reconstruction/Sanskrit/आनपानस्मृति. Chuck Entz (talk) 15:47, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

@Chuck Entz: This word is attested, but the lemma is misspelt. The correct lemma should be आनापानस्मृति (ānāpānasmṛti), notice the three long ā's. For attestation, see link to Univ. Oslo Buddhist library (The Udānavarga). The term आनापान (ānāpāna) is in Edgerton's dictionary (last headword in column 1). --Frigoris (talk) 19:11, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

Given that the Tocharian B entry is at ānāpānasmrti with long vowels in the expected places, and @GabeMoore admits to not knowing much Sanskrit beyond what's in the Tocharian B dictionary, the probability of a misreading or a typo is quite high. Does anyone have access to that dictionary? I'm curious whether it uses Devanagari or transliteration, and whether it really has this spelling. If it has transliterations, the use of different diacritics on the same letters to indicate completely different Devanagari letters makes it very dangerous to do what I call "backliteration". If it's a simple error in copying from the source, the best solution might be to move it to the correct spelling and to create a new alternative form entry at this spelling in the unlikely event that someone finds evidence for it. @Caoimhin ceallach: The Adams dictionary uses the ISO-style r̥ for vocalic R (IAST ṛ). Many of the Sanskrit loanwords in Tocharian B (mostly Buddhist terms) were simply taken "as written", even though (if I remember correctly) Tocharian B doesn't have the vocalic R natively. Tocharian B was written in a Brahmic script evidently descending from old Indic scripts, so this kind of "orthographic loan" is possible. --Frigoris (talk) 07:44, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
