āwāze

āwāze is آوازه in Persian alphabet, but its meaning has nothing to do with swamp. I've searched in Persian and Middle Persian dictionaries but couldn't find any similiar word related to this meaning. --Z 04:32, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Martirosyan quotes "H. Bailey, Dictionary of Khotan Saka, pp. 478-479" as his source, where I find NPers āvāzah “swamp”; see here, s.v. haysina. Can you find anything similar to āvāzah? --Vahag (talk) 06:04, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

I just looked closer at աւազան which is apparently read as awazan, right? The source most probably meant آبزن (ābzan), which is from MPers ʾpzn' (āp-zan, āb-zan), both mean "bath, pool". --Z 08:03, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

I don't think Bailey is mistaken. آبزن (ābzan) is parallel to աւազան (awazan), while this āvāzah is parallel to աւազ (awaz). If you search Google Books for "avazah", you will find the following passage: "...In the Persian geography Hudud-al-Alam (ed. Minorsky, folio 4 a, 56, 185), is listed the avazah-i-bai- kand, 'the swamp (baiixah) of Paikand...". So "avazah" is real. --Vahag (talk) 09:03, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, created its entry (آوازه), it's a weird word, I found two interesting articles on it. (abzan is probably etymologically related to it btw (otherwise it is from an Avestan word), according to the sources) --Z 22:03, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
