Old Armenian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

The origin is uncertain.

Has been compared to Latin sabulum (gravel, sand), Ancient Greek ψάμμος (psámmos), ἄμαθος (ámathos, sand) and Proto-Germanic *samdaz and derived from Proto-Indo-European *sabʰ-.[1][2]

Martirosyan proposes borrowing from Iranian; compare Sogdian 𐼰𐼰𐼴𐼵𐼷𐼷 (ʾʾwzyy /*ōwazē/), [script needed] (ʾʾwzʾk /āwaze, āwāz/, lake, pond), Persian آوازه (âvâze, swamp; pool), Old Armenian աւազան (awazan, pool; receptacle, washing tub, watering trough, cauldron, laver, bath) (from Iranian), with a semantic shift “swamp” → “silt” → “sand”.[3]

Compare also Mazanderani وازیک (vâzik, sand).
