Etymology

[edit]

From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾp̄zn' /ābzan/). Compare Classical Syriac ܐܘܙܢܐ (ʾāwzānāʾ), Old Armenian աւազան (awazan), Old Georgian ავაზანი (avazani), Georgian აბაზანა (abazana), Aghwan 𐔰𐕛𐔰𐔵𐔰𐕎 (avazan), all Iranian borrowings.

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “What's the further origin? Is the first component آب (āb, water)? If so, what's the second component? However, if truly related to آوازه (âvâze), IE etymology becomes less viable.”
