[edit]Uncertain; possibly borrowed from Gaulish *boudi, from Proto-Celtic *boudi (“profit, gains; victory”),[1] or perhaps from Proto-West Germanic *biūtijan, from *bi- (locative prefix) + *ūt (“out, outward”) + *-jan.[2]
