Etymology

From *spě̀ti (advance, ripen, hurry) +‎ *-xъ, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *speh₁- (succeed, prosper). Cognate with Lithuanian spė̃kas (power), Latvian spȩ̀ks (power).
