[edit]From *spě̑xъ (“haste”) + *-iti, from *spě̀ti (“advance, ripen, hurry”) + *-xъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *spḗˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *spéh₁-ti (root present), from *speh₁- (“succeed, prosper”). Compare Proto-West Germanic *spōdijan.
