From *spě̑xъ (haste) +‎ *-iti, from *spě̀ti (advance, ripen, hurry) +‎ *-xъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *spḗˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *spéh₁-ti (root present), from *speh₁- (succeed, prosper). Compare Proto-West Germanic *spōdijan.
