[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *sēdḗˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *sed-éh₁-ye-ti, from *sed- by Winter's law, or directly from the lengthened Narten root *sḗd-. Cognate with Latvian sēdēt, Lithuanian sėdėti.
