[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *prīˀjā́ˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *priH-eh₂-ti, from *priHós (“dear, beloved”). Cognate with Sanskrit प्रीणाति (prīṇā́ti, “to please”), Persian آفریدن (âfaridan, “to create”) and Old High German frīten (“to look after”).
