Is the divergence in meaning of przyjąć to sprzyjać, which is morphologically a baseword for the latter, a secondary development? --Ivan Štambuk (talk) 13:55, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
- I doubt that przyjąć pf is actually related to sprzyjać impf. Note different aspect. przyjąć seems to be przy- + jąć (“literary: to begin; obsolete: to take hold”), imperfective of jąć being, I think, imać. Compare přijmout pf, přijímat impf. (Also, I think the nasal vowel would not appear in Polish out of nowhere.) Keφr 14:24, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
- Oh I see. So this must be a mistake then, or defective orthography.. --Ivan Štambuk (talk) 18:12, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
- I guess the former… the definition they give looks a bit suspicious to me, and completely unrelated: przyjechać (“to arrive (by driving or riding)”). But still, these two are most probably… false friends. Keφr 08:38, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
- False cognates, indeed. See also Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European/yeh₂-
