- *koldьcь (*-ędzь > *-ьcь)
Etymology
[edit]- Borrowed from Proto-Germanic *kaldingaz (“?”), from *kaldaz (“cold”) + *-ingaz or *kaldijǭ. The word is only attested in toponyms Käldinge (literally “der Quellenort”), Källinge (< källa), Danish Kolding, Kalding. Also compare Finnish kaltio (“spring”), Old Norse kelda (“spring”), Danish kilde (“spring”).
- For the meaning compare Norwegian verma, vermsl, Lithuanian šaltìnis (“source”), (šáltas (“cold”)), Old Church Slavonic студеньць (studenĭcĭ) (< *studenьcь, *studъ)
- From *kolda + *-ędzь.
- For the meaning compare *stublь, Lithuanian šulinỹs (“well”) (šùlas)
