[edit]Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic *кладѣньць (*kladěnĭcĭ), from Proto-Slavic *koldenьсь (“stabber, sword of stabbing type”). Related to Proto-Celtic *kladiwos (“stabber, sword of stabbing type”), Proto-Slavic *kolti (“to stub”). Native East Slavic *колоденьць > Russian: *колоденец.
