Etymology

Usually viewed as expressive or onomatopoeic in nature. Analogous forms found also in Lithuanian klepsė́ti (to slam), kleptóti (to munch noisily); Proto-Germanic *klappōną (to clap). Vasmer further compares Latin crepō (to creak).
