[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gīˀwetei, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷíh₃weti.
Baltic cognates include Lithuanian gýti (“to heal; to recover”).
Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit जीवति (jī́vati), Latin vīvō (“to live”) (infinitive vīvere).
