[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *sth₂tós, verbal adjective formation from *steh₂- (“to stand”). Cognate with Ancient Greek στατός (statós, “placed, standing”), Sanskrit स्थित (sthita, “standing”), Latin status (“fixed, set”).
