[edit]From Proto-Hellenic *statós, from Proto-Indo-European *sth₂tós (“placed, standing”). Cognate with Sanskrit स्थित (sthita, “standing, situated”), Latin status (“fixed, set”), and Old Norse staðr (“restive, stubborn (of a horse)”).
