From Proto-Indo-European *skewbʰ-, *skūbʰ- (to push, drive, move forward), possibly metathesized from *ksewbʰ- (compare Sanskrit क्षुभ् (kṣubh, to throw, shake, agitate)). Cognate with Lithuanian skubė́ti (to hurry, rush), Polish skubać (to pull quickly, pluck).[1]
