[edit]First attested as bisel in 1313. Derived from laag (“low, lower”) and a compound of either Old Dutch Biso (a personal name) or bies (“rush, Scirpus”) and lo (“light forest on sandy soil”). Compare Beesd, Beesel and Bisselt.
