[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as elburg in 1225. Etymology uncertain. Several interprations of El- have been proposed, ranging from a personal name to a reference to the city being located on an elevated section of land to a derivation from a term related to elleboog (“elbow”) (impossible because of the presence of -n- in older forms of the word, see Middle Dutch elne (“elbow”)). A derivation from Middle Dutch *helberg (“hill among low-lying terrain”) is also unlikely. The use of ter elborch implies that the second element is Middle Dutch borch (“castle, fortified settlement”). See also Elspeet.
