Elspeet
Appearance
Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as de elspete in 1227. Etymology uncertain. Compound of an unclear first element and speet (“dug ground”). The first element has been interpreted to mean "old" (to contrast with Nunspeet), although no forms of the toponym that include a dental are attested. A derivation from els (“alder, Alnus”) is also possible. See also Elburg.
