Etymology

[edit]

Potentially attested as de bisde in 1129, attested with certainty as in beseth in 1224. Etymology uncertain. The (potential) oldest attestation seems to indicate a derivation from Old Dutch bies (bulrush, Scirpus) with collectivising suffix *-iþi. However, this derivation clashes with younger attestations. Compare Beesel, Bisselt and Lage Bijssel.
