Etymology
[edit]First attested as de Biessael in 1570. Compound toponym derived from bies (“rush”) and a second element that is either Middle Dutch sael (“unit of land”), veld (“field”) or lo (“light forest”). Compare Beesel, Hasselt and Lage Bijssel.
