[edit]From Upper German dialects, from Middle High German knödel (“dumpling, noodle”), equivalent to Knoten + -el. Cognate to Yiddish קניידל (kneydl), Bavarian Knedl, Dutch knoedel, Middle Low German knudel, knūdel, German Low German Knudel (“lump, mass”).
