From Proto-Turkic *edgü (good, excellent). Cognate with Chuvash ырӑ (yră), Old Turkic 𐰓𐰏𐰇 (edgü), Karakhanid اَذْكُو (eδgǖ), Turkish iyi and Yakut үтүө (ütüö).
