Etymology

The word is translated from Greek κατηγορία (katigoría), which was borrowed by Japanese philosopher Inoue Tetsujirō in the 1881 work 哲学字彙 (Tetsugaku Jii, Dictionary of Philosophy) as a translation of English category, based on the phrase 洪範九疇 in the Book of Documents (尚書 or 書經》).[1][2]
