May be from Middle Chinese compound 本書 / 本书 (pwonX syo, literally trunk; main + writing). Compare modern Mandarin reading běnshū, Cantonese bun2 syu1, Hakka pún-sû.

Alternatively, may have been composed in Japan of Middle Chinese-derived components, as a compound of (hon, main; this) + (sho, writing; document; book).
