Noun
[edit]唐山人
- native of Tangshan; resident of Tangshan
- (chiefly Southern Min, dated in Taiwanese and Philippine Hokkien) mainlander (Mainland China)
Usage notes
[edit]- This term was primarily used to describe non-Hoklo people from Mainland China, a large number of whom had emigrated to Taiwan after 1949. It was later replaced by 外省人 (gōa-séng-lâng) in Taiwan.
- Third generation Chinese Filipinos and younger usually refer to Mainland Chinese as 大陸仔/大陆仔 (tāi-lio̍k-á), though elderly Chinese Filipinos, particularly of the Silent Generation or some Baby boomers, use this term.
