Usage notes
[edit]- The term is said to originally be derived from euphemistic usages in Mafia/underground crime organizations in older Shanghai, referring to offing someone quietly. However now the term has been adapted into the mainstream and often can be used humorously or metaphorically, often with lingering reference to popular imaginations of stereotypical thug bosses.
