Etymology
[edit]今上 (kinjō) + 天皇 (tennō). The former part is borrowed from Middle Chinese 今上 (MC kim dzyangX).
The shō changes to jō as an instance of rendaku (連濁); also read kinshō without rendaku in older texts.
