Etymology
[edit]From お (o-) + 願う (negau, “request, implore”) + します (shimasu, a polite honorific (丁寧語 (teineigo)) formula used to show respect to the hearer). The latter portion is the formal or socially distanced form of する (suru). See also ます (-masu, suffix).
