Etymology

From (o-) + (ねが) (negau, request, implore) + します (shimasu, a polite honorific ((てい)(ねい)() (teineigo)) formula used to show respect to the hearer). The latter portion is the formal or socially distanced form of する (suru). See also ます (-masu, suffix).
