[edit]Possibly from the theorized form *ἀλθέσσω (*althéssō) suffixed with -ις (-is). Ultimately from Proto-Hellenic *h₂el-dʰ-, itself from Proto-Indo-European *h₂el- (“to grow, nourish”).
