Burmese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *ʔoŋ¹ (win, complete); forms outside Lolo-Burmese, like Jingpho [script needed] (ʔōŋ, to conquer, overcome), are probably borrowed from Burmese (STEDT). Note also similarities to Old Chinese (OC *leŋ, “to win”) (which is constructed with a uvular by Baxter and Sagart; uvulars in Proto-Sino-Tibetan seem to be dropped in Burmese).
