From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *zan¹ (strong, firm), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *b-tsan (strong, firm, steadfast); cognate with the first syllable of Tibetan བཙན་པོ་ (btsan po, violent, strong) (STEDT).
