From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *hya¹ (swidden, field (mountain)), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-ya (swidden); cognate with Jingpho [script needed] (yi, field) (STEDT). Despite superficial similarities to Tibetan (la, hillside, mountain pass) and modern Chinese (, “open country, field, wilderness, countryside area”), the Tibetan and Chinese terms are likely not related.
