Pronunciation

Etymology 1

[edit]

Probably from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g-(j/r)a (right (hand)). See also ယာ (ya, right (direction)), Old Chinese (OC *ɢʷɯʔ, *ɢʷɯs, “idem”) (STEDT).

Particularly: “Where does the palatal nasal come from? STEDT doesn't assign ña to *g-(j/r)a - is it a regular sound change? Benedict does give an entry gloss "right side ( cf. ya )", however.”

Particularly: “Unclear if mentioned by STEDT (ña "scream in concert; flatter ( cf. kro-ŋra )"), and doesn't seem to be mentioned by Luce 1981. Very vague resemblance to Old Chinese (OC *lo, “to flatter”).”
