Inherited from Old Burmese ခိုဝ်း (khuiw), from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *kəw² (to steal), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r-kəw ~ hu (to steal). Cognate with Nuosu (ku), (kux njie, to steal), Lolopo ker (to steal), Naxi kv (to steal), Jingpho lägu (to steal), Drung keu (to steal), Yakkha खुमा (khuma, to steal), Tibetan རྐུ (rku, to steal), Old Chinese (OC *kʰoːs, “to rob”) (STEDT).

From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *kəw² (smoke), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kəw-n/t (idem). Cognate with the second syllable of Jingpho [script needed] (wan-khut, smoke), Old Chinese (OC *qʰun, “to smoke, steam, ablaze”) (STEDT).
