ไฟในอย่านำออก ไฟนอกอย่านำเข้า
Thai
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From ไฟ (fai, “fire; flame”) + ใน (nai, “in; inner; internal; within”) + อย่า (yàa, “not”) + นำ (nam, “to bring; to take”) + ออก (ɔ̀ɔk, “out; outwards”) + ไฟ (fai, “fire; flame”) + นอก (nɔ̂ɔk, “out; outer; external”) + อย่า (yàa, “not”) + นำ (nam, “to bring; to take”) + เข้า (kâo, “to enter; in, into; etc”); literally "internal fire shall not be brought out, external fire shall not to be brought in".
Originating from a Buddhist story in the Dhammapada: When Lady Visākhā is about to marry, her father, Dhananjaya the Treasurer, gives her this admonition: "My child, as long as you dwell in your father-in-law's family, the in-door fire is not to be taken out of doors; out-door fire is not to be brought within doors." He later explains as follows: "Dear girl, if you notice any fault in your mother-in-law, or your father-in-law, or your husband, do not tell of it outside in some one else's house. There is no worse fire than this." And he adds that "If any of your neighbours, whether male or female, speak ill of your father-in-law, or of your husband, do not bring their talk home, and repeat it saying. For there is no fire comparable to this fire."
