Etymology

From แม่ (mɛ̂ɛ, “female prefix”) +‎ มด (mót, “person of occult knowledge; person who practices magic or sorcery”).

Cognate with Lao ແມ່ມົດ (mǣ mot, “witch”), Zhuang mehmoed (“female shaman”), Lü ᦶᦙᧈᦷᦙᧆ (mae¹mod, “witch”); Compared with Khmer មេមត់ (mei mŭət, “witch; medium”).
