[edit]Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀼𑀢𑁆𑀢 (putta), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀧𑀼𑀢 (puta), from Sanskrit पुत्र (putrá), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *putrás (“son”), from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂w- (“small, little, few”). Doublet of પુત્ર (putra) and પિસર (pisar). Cognate with Hindustani پوت / पूत (pūt), Punjabi پتر / ਪੁੱਤਰ (puttar), Bengali পুত (put). Wider cognates include Persian پسر (pesar), English few.
