[edit]Inherited from Prakrit *𑀫𑀁𑀕𑀇 (*maṃgaï), nasalized variant of 𑀫𑀕𑁆𑀕𑀇 (maggaï), from Sanskrit मार्गति (mārgati, “to seek out (on a road)”), denominal verb from मार्ग (mārga, “road (originally, of a wild animal)”), vriddhi of मृग (mṛga, “wild animal”). Cognate with Assamese মাগা (maga), Odia ମାଗିବା (māgibā), Gujarati માગવું (māgvũ), માંગવું (mā̃gvũ), Hindi माँगना (māṅgnā), Punjabi ਮੰਗਣਾ (maṅgṇā), Marathi मागणे (māgṇe). Doublet of মৃগ (mrig), মার্গ (margo), মার্গশীর্ষ (margośirśo), মাং (maṅ), মাগ (mag), মাগন (magon), and মাগনা (magona).
