Etymology

    Inherited from Prakrit 𑀫𑀕𑁆𑀕𑀇 (maggaï), from Sanskrit मार्ग॑ति (mā́rgati), from मार्ग (mārga), a vṛddhi derivative of मृग (mṛga), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mr̥gás. Cognate to Bengali মাগা (maga) and Hindi माँगना (māṅgnā).
