Etymology

Inherited from Prakrit *𑀫𑀁𑀕 (*maṃga), nasalized variant of 𑀫𑀕𑁆𑀕 (magga), from Sanskrit मार्ग (mārga, road (originally, of a wild animal)), vriddhi of मृग (mṛga, wild animal), with extensive semantic shift: "road of a wild animal" > "road of a beggar" > "beggar" > "female beggar" > "harlot" > "vagina". Doublet of মৃগ (mrig), মার্গ (margo), মার্গশীর্ষ (margośirśo), মাগ (mag), মাগন (magon), মাগনা (magona), and মাঙ্গা (maṅga).
