Inherited from Prakrit 𑀫𑀕𑁆𑀕 (magga), from Sanskrit मार्ग (mārga, road (originally, of a wild animal)), vriddhi of मृग (mṛga, wild animal)​, with extensive semantic shift: "road of wild animal" > "road of a beggar" > "beggar" > "female beggar" > "harlot", "wife", "woman". Doublet of মৃগ (mrig), মার্গ (margo), মার্গশীর্ষ (margośirśo), মাং (maṅ), মাগন (magon), মাগনা (magona), and মাঙ্গা (maṅga).
