Inherited from Sanskrit मशकहरी (maśakaharī, literally mosquito remover), from मशक (maśaka, mosquito) +‎ हरी (harī, remover, from हर (hara, removing) +‎ -ई (, doer)). Cognate with Bengali মশারি (mośari), Odia ମସହରୀ (masahari), ମସାରୀ (masāri), Sindhi مَهَآرِي (mahārī), Hindi मसहरी (masahrī).
